MAFI Shipping

MAFI shipping, also known as roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) trailer shipping, is a specialized logistics method used for transporting heavy, oversized, and non-containerized cargo using flatbed wheeled trailers called MAFI trailers. These trailers are designed to be rolled directly onto RoRo vessels, making them ideal for cargo that cannot be efficiently shipped in standard containers. Common goods transported through MAFI shipping include project cargo, heavy machinery, industrial equipment, construction materials, vehicles, steel structures, generators, turbines, and other large or irregularly shaped items. The key advantage of MAFI shipping lies in its efficiency and safety for handling high-weight and oversized cargo, as it eliminates the need for complex lifting operations that are often required in conventional breakbulk shipping. Instead, cargo is securely fastened to the MAFI trailer and rolled on and off the vessel using terminal tractors, significantly reducing handling time and the risk of damage. MAFI trailers come in various sizes and weight capacities, allowing them to accommodate a wide range of cargo dimensions and load requirements, making them highly adaptable for diverse industrial and commercial needs. This shipping method is widely used in ports equipped with RoRo terminals, which feature specialized ramps, parking lanes, and cargo securing systems to ensure smooth operations. MAFI shipping plays a crucial role in sectors such as oil and gas, power generation, mining, construction, and large-scale infrastructure development, where transporting massive equipment safely and efficiently is essential for project success. From a logistics perspective, MAFI shipping offers improved cargo visibility, simplified port operations, and faster turnaround times compared to traditional lifting-based methods. It also enables seamless intermodal transportation, as MAFI trailers can be transferred between ships, trucks, and sometimes rail systems without the need to unload the cargo itself. In recent years, the demand for MAFI shipping has grown steadily due to the rise in global infrastructure projects, renewable energy developments such as wind farms, and expanding industrial supply chains. Technological improvements in trailer design, cargo lashing systems, and digital tracking platforms have further enhanced the reliability and efficiency of MAFI operations. At the same time, safety regulations and international maritime standards ensure that cargo is properly secured and vessels operate under strict compliance to protect both goods and the marine environment. Despite higher initial handling costs compared to standard container shipping, MAFI shipping remains a preferred solution for complex and heavy-lift cargo because of its operational flexibility, reduced risk of cargo damage, and ability to handle extraordinary load requirements. Overall, MAFI shipping is a critical enabler of modern industrial trade, supporting the movement of oversized and high-value cargo across global maritime routes and contributing significantly to the success of large-scale engineering, construction, and energy projects worldwide.
